The Wellness Centre proposes a blend of spaces, including the yoga/ meditation areas, individual/ private spaces (specially designed pods with different heights, to offer a variety of arrangements for students and staff, comfortable sitting areas with view to the interior garden, an outside terrace towards the water canal and vegetation and lavatories and a minimal storage room, as the building does not require continuous maintenance, being visitor/ user led, but featuring a reception.
The brief requirements include designing a Wellness Centre adjacent to the Barbara Hepworth building, part of the University campus, that will serve the ADA staff and students. This project proposes a meditation centre that not only contains areas for group and individual contemplation, but also spaces for exhibitions and reading. As central inspiration, the proposal presents a reinterpretation of the elements found in the immediate surroundings of the given site, such as the arches presented in the attached diagrams. Being positioned close to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, the building is directing the East views towards the vegetation, while inside, it introduces the natural theme through a longitudinal interior courtyard.
